In October 2024, Bynd Artisan celebrated its 10th anniversary at its flagship store in Jalan Merah Saga. But the event was more than a milestone — it was also a farewell. The home-grown brand, known for its handcrafted leather and paper goods, closed its doors in February 2025 after nearly a decade in the area.
Bynd Artisan’s departure is just one of many. Long-time favourites like Thambi Magazine Store, Sunday Folks ice cream parlour, and party supply shop Khiam Teck have also shut down. The reasons? Declining foot traffic, rising rents, and changing consumer habits.
Fewer Visitors, Fewer Sales
On a typical weekday, fewer than 10 people pass by some storefronts in Holland Village. Even weekends don’t bring much improvement. For small businesses, this drop in visitors makes it hard to survive.
The area, which includes Lorong Mambong, Lorong Liput, Holland Avenue, and Chip Bee Gardens, was once known for its bohemian charm and mix of old and new. But with newer hotspots drawing crowds elsewhere, Holland Village is struggling to keep up.
A Place with Deep Roots
Holland Village wasn’t named after the Netherlands, as many assume. It’s believed to be named after Hugh Holland, a British architect and amateur actor who lived in the area in the early 1900s. The neighbourhood evolved from a kampung into a lively district filled with terraced houses, shophouses, and walk-up apartments.
For years, it was a go-to destination for expats, artists, and foodies. But now, many of its iconic spots are gone or going.
What’s Next for Holland Village?
Despite the downturn, some businesses are holding on, and new developments like One Holland Village mall are trying to breathe fresh life into the area. But the question remains: can Holland Village reinvent itself without losing what made it special?
